We’re in the land of the free where everything costs

-Rexx Life Raj

Capitalism kills. Every. Single. Day. Capitalism plus racism equals fascism, to quote the Panthers.

If it wasn’t evident already, let’s take a quick look at where this country is currently at right now as of October 2020. The country has been drastically changed forever by this government’s mishandling of COVID-19. Over 200,000 families were forced to mourn, grieve and lay to rest their loved ones who lost their life from a virus because our society only provides healthcare for those who can afford it. If the moral consciousness of America was ever in question, let’s just look at how the President was able to get immediate treatment from a team of high-level medical professionals as soon as he announced his diagnosis, compared to hundreds or thousands of citizens who were turned away, left to suffer and die due to a lack of access to healthcare. If a clinically obese 74-year-old man with pre-existing conditions can beat COVID in less than three days, there is no reason so many human beings lost their life in this country; well besides the fact that they simply couldn’t afford to because capitalism kills. While conservatives will continue to be open about their intentions to keep prioritizing profits over people, Neoliberals continue to reiterate talking points about Obama Care and single-payer healthcare. We have watched for years the cries of the poor and sick go unheard, unnoticed and outright ignored. Biden has opposed a “Medicare for All” system for years, and still cannot jump on board despite a global pandemic. Ultimately, capitalism will always win as long as we continue to participate in this evil system and believe the only choice we have is deciding to select the lesser of two evils.

Capitalism kills. The same society that will allow for those who can’t afford to pay for medical attention, also allows for children to go hungry and for thousands of people to be unhoused every day. In Sacramento County alone, we have roughly 6000 folxs who are unhoused on any given night. The folxs who have committed themselves to the work of fighting for the people’s basic human rights have calculated that it would cost approximately $121 Million to put all of our unhoused folxs in long term housing. $121 million is $35million less than Sacramento PD’s budget; and that is not even a quarter of the county budget for the Sacramento Sheriff. The government could house folxs but yet due to capitalism and racist politicians and policies the people are left to suffer. The government has committed to the interests of capital over the interest of its citizenry.

“We got money for wars but can’t feed the poor”

-Tupac Shakur

Capitalism kills. The same system that does not find it worthwhile to follow the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights not only keeps homes vacant instead of providing shelter for the people but has even criminalized being unhoused. Don’t believe me? Check the facts. In surveying 187 cities across the U.S., the the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty found that 34% of cities have city-wide bans on camping in public (which, depending on the city, can include everything from setting up temporary housing to simply sleeping outdoors), 43% percent of cities prohibit sleeping in vehicles, and 53% of cities make it illegal to simply sit or lie down in public. Not only have cities across the country made it illegal to be unhoused but they have utilized the police to continue to terrorize and choke the life out of our most vulnerable. In the midst of a global pandemic, we are watching city and county officials evict our folxs on the street, steal and destroy their property and give fines and citations that ultimately further criminalize our unhoused folxs. The city of Sacramento is currently trying to make it illegal for people to park their vehicle on the street overnight which will again only further criminalize those on the streets who utilize their vehicle as their shelter through the night. When will the people get some relief?

Capitalism kills. The same government that refuses to house the people, also continues to demand “law and order,” and refuses to acknowledge the role capitalism plays in the occurrence of crime. When we talk about solving the problem of crime we are really talking about solving the problem of poverty, we don’t have a crime problem here in the United States, we have a poverty problem. People are literally desperate to make ends meet. We are withholding people’s basic human needs: shelter, food, clothing, etc. for Jeff Bezos or Bill Gates or whoever to become rich; please make it make sense. We know that George Floyd was lynched under the knee of police but how many Black folxs have perished under the knee of capitalism? We know that capitalism was a driving factor in the genocide of the Indigenous nations throughout this land during America’s Manifest Destiny time period. America was giving out money to kill Indigenous people and bringing back their scalps! Capitalism kills.

The same country who has taught you since kindergarten that we live in the greatest country on earth, isn’t even ranked in the top five in anything other than the prison population, propaganda and oppression. This makes sense though, considering how the prison-industrial complex is really a reformed version of the slave trade. Those incarcerated work for slave wages and are sent back into the world with little chance at a “fresh start.” This country has legitimized denying the formerly incarcerated from working, thus thrusting them right back in poverty and essentially funneling folxs back to the steets for their income. This entire system is designed to uplift the rich and marginalize the poor, and even worse because of capitalism, society has begun to blame the oppressed instead of the oppressor. By the way, the majority of y’all aren’t even capitalist but the human capital that allows this fascist system to continue, we are simply cogs in the machine of capitalism, which is why our jobs are so quick to replace us. It isn’t hard to see how capitalism kills; from the unhoused to the incarcerated. The dollar bill runs this country and the love of money is the root of all evil.
